Jake Plummer joined his former Broncos teammate Nate Jackson on the inaugural episode of his new podcast called Dumb Jock, from Guerilla Sports. Jake discusses his transition from professional football to promoting wellness through functional mushrooms. He explores the benefits of mushrooms like Chaga, the world's most potent antioxidant, as well as Lion's Mane and Turkey Tail for mental clarity and "second brain" gut health, respectively.
Plummer emphasizes how these non-psychedelic mushrooms support holistic wellness without the side effects commonly associated with pharmaceuticals. He shares his personal experiences with functional mushrooms in enhancing his post-NFL health, advocating for natural, plant-based supplements to aid in recovery and overall well-being.
Being introduced to functional mushrooms
I got introduced to functional mushrooms through Charlotte's Web. You know Charlotte's Web back in the day, with CBD and educating people on the difference between CBD and marijuana — and its healing properties, all its benefits, and what it was doing for kids with seizures. And now that's gone on its own path, you know.
So I felt like my body stopped aching as much during during that time of the pandemic and, coming out of it, I spent a period where I didn't eat meat for a while. I don't currently drink alcohol, although I never really drank heavily, but I would have six, seven beers in the summer at the lake, or maybe nine or ten if it was a good day, you know, and people were around. I stopped doing that, maybe having a beer or a glass of wine with dinner. And now, I just cut that out. Now I believe my body can heal, you know?
Are functional mushrooms psychedelic? Will they make me high?
Functional mushrooms are non-psychedelic. They will not make you high. We have to clarify that to people all the time.
Functional mushrooms are a food group
We're trying to create knowledge and awareness of nature. This [mushrooms] is a food group. That's food right there.
